This timely book detailing the upcoming lifting of almost all trade barriers between the twelve nations of the European Economic Community will be of interest to business students and those interested in current affairs. The merging of the European nation economies will make that region the world's new superpower. Already European leaders are exerting more influence on the international stage. The sudden and unexpected collapse of Eastern Europe and the unification of East and West Germany will only make a united Europe more powerful.

Canadians wanting to take advantage of this new market will in most cases have literally to move new operations there. Pitts interviews some large and medium-sized firms already in Europe and gives important information on networking with business and government.

For those Canadian companies that do take advantage of the European market the gains for Canada will be minimal. It will be more a situation of Canadian firms operating in Europe employing Europeans and using European resources to produce products for Europe. In essence, the new plants will complement existing Canadian plants more than use them.

Nevertheless, the opportunities for many small and medium-sized Canadian companies to find markets in Europe exist, provided they do a lot of research and are prepared to invest time and resources there. To successfully do so they will have to read books like this one and be willing to make changes and look at the long-term potential.

Recommended for high school libraries and general libraries.
