MAKING A DIFFERENCE: A GUIDE FOR VOLUNTEERING FOR CANADIAN YOUTH

Volume 18 Number 5
The authors, who have extensive volunteer experience, have written a book of very useful information for teenagers (and even adults) who want to become volunteers. They begin by discussing why people volunteer and the personal benefits that can come from volunteering. They then describe various fields in which people can volunteer and name organizations that welcome volunteers. Areas of service range from visiting residents of local seniors homes to joining Amnesty International or the youth wing of a political party. Teachers, librarians and counsellors who work with high school students should be familiar with this book so that they can direct interested students to it. My only criticism of the book is the inclusion of addresses and telephone number of the branches across Canada for many of the volunteer organizations. Why not simply provide the names and suggest readers look up the numbers in their local telephone directories? This would have resulted in a more concise book that would not become obsolete so quickly. Recommended.
