Vicky Delorian is in the throes of the difficult teens. Her parents are divorced, her mother has a boyfriend and her dad is far too busy running around with girls half his age to find time for her. She feels left out and depressed, and she tries to hide behind a front of bravado - mean-mouthing everyone who comes her way.

When her mother decides to get married again and Vicky gains not only a stepfather but an impossible Aunt Margaret, she turns to her father in desperation. During her mother's honeymoon, Vicky stays with Dad, but there is little companionship there. She meets Mom and "Ben" in California and the friction gets worse. Vicky finally meets handsome Blake and finds out how much trouble she can really get into. A little pot, a little beer, and she's scrambling for a way out.

The story is narrated by Vicky and is told well. Teenagers will definitely relate to the difficulties encountered with Mom, although maybe not with as much understanding as Vicky shows in some instances. The episodes with Blake are certainly realistic, and frightening. The dad's character is sketchy, but the stepfather comes through with humour and sincerity.

The characterization of Vicky as an average teen wanting to be thought of as mature but still very naive, resisting mother's authority but still needing her friendship and guidance, has been handled very well, with just the right level of respect without being didactic. This book is a quick, easy read and should be very popular.

The book has a glossy, bright cover, guaranteed to catch the reader's eye, the print is large, paper is of good stock, and the book is well bound.
