Volume 18 Number 3 1990 May Small Rain is a collection of fifteen short stories told by the same narrator, a very average small-college English professor. From the stories one learns that the narrator is divorced, has a variety of love affairs, and is concerned about the future of his children. Each story concentrates on some experience the narrator has had, from escorting his parents to Reno and his latest relationship with Carol or Donna or Alison or Connie to dealing with his children growing up. The stories are easy to follow and clearly written; however, adult language and situations are in the text. On first reading these stories, I kept waiting for something exciting and unusual to happen. It did not. And it is this very non-excitement that is the focal point of these stories. Small Rain is about life - no great revelations, no great truths, just the ordinariness of life - the growing old, growing up, growing away from. With this premise clearly in mind, I would say that this is honest reading and a recommended title for public libraries.
