No Dinosaurs in the Park is a delightful new book by Dorothy Joan Harris. It is a flight into the imagination shared by n young girl and her grandfather, and the warmth of their relationship gives it validity. During one of their frequent outings to the park, Grandpa warns the little girl of a nearby dinosaur, as evidenced by his tail in the water. She, seeing only a branch at first, quickly joins in the game and finds her share of dinosaurs.

The reader is also drawn into the fantasy by the illustrations. Although the small picture above the text shows the actual scene in the park, the full illustration on the opposite page depicts the same scene as imagined by the pair. The illustrations thereby extend the text and invite the reader to play along.

When Grandpa and the little girl return home, the mother crossly denies the existence of dinosaurs. Turning the page, however, causes young children to laugh aloud: the final sentence "But Grandpa and I know better" is accompanied by the picture of the two of them snuggled in a large chair while a small dinosaur pokes his head and tail out from beneath it.

This book begs to be shared with young children, who will benefit from the positive relationship between the child and her grandparent, as well as enjoy the skilful blend of colourful illustrations and imaginative story.
