Louis and the Night Sky's combination of story and plentiful illustrations with a simple presentation of the solar system is sure to please young children and those who offer this picture-book to them. Louis, who appears on almost every page wearing his red pajamas adorned with yellow stars and clutching a slightly scruffy monkey who mirrors his expressions, has a not-too-serious problem - he's too restless to sleep one night even though he's been "cuddled and snuggled." The beautifully blended colours of Nicola Morgan's paintings successfully distract the reader or listener from the fact Louis' journey through the night sky begins rather easily, with just a wish and a telescope. Morgan's text and her illustrations are faithful to the individual characteristics and position of each planet. The storms on Jupiter, the mountains of Mercury and all the other distant planetary features fascinate Louis and his monkey. At last Louis sees "a magic blue marble in the darkness... lovelier than any of the planets he had visited." Louis returns to his own bedroom, now supplied with a star-shaped night light, and sleeps.
