Peter and his white cat Sebastian sit and watch the snow fall, as Peter laments, "I hate winter." That night Peter is transported on a magical ride, astride an enlarged, pony-sized Sebastian, to see the mysteries of winter. The cat shows him how winter has many secrets - plant roots under the soil, waiting for spring, hibernating animals, animals that hunt for food, and other nature lore about winter.

As translated by Eveline Hasler, this story is a fanciful yet informative means of telling how winter encloses and protects while preparing for spring. Peter better appreciates this and concludes, "I like winter." The story ends with Sebastian and Peter tramping across an open field to the beckoning lights of home.

Michele Lemieux evokes a nostalgic richness in her warm colours of "hearth and home." She captures the icy stillness of the outdoors deep in snow. The beautiful illustrations are well worth the purchase of the book.

This is a well-bound book, with clear, large printing and excellent spacing.
