Volume 18 Number 2 1990 March The main point of this book is that Stephanie Powell likes Anne Delaney in the way that her friend Devi likes Eric Sullivan. We follow Stephanie through the book as she tries to sort out her feelings of confusion about whether or not she is gay. Using an art sculpture as the means for Stephanie to come in contact with an older lesbian couple, the author also manages to bring in various other characters, including Anne Delaney, who present differing attitudes towards homosexuality. The focus of the book - not so much Stephanie's feelings for Anne Delaney, but her concern for how she would know if she was actually gay, or whether it was just a normal, passing crush on another girl - is very interest­ing. I was quite let down by the lack of development in any characters other than the main one. Everyone else might have been taken from a tableau of stereotypes. The angry, homosexual-hating father, the loving older brother who hasn't much time for Stephanie because he has a life of his own, the object of someone's passion who is very different from what she appears to be - all seemed to be too contrived to make this a really worthwhile study of a young girl coming to grips with her feelings. I feel, however, that despite its flaws, this book could be of benefit to young people who are caught in a similar situation - that of not being sure if they are gay or not.
