Volume 18 Number 2 1990 March Stone's fourth book, the first for children, contains fourteen brief stories involving ghosts, both "real" and imagined. Most of the book's contents grew out of Stone's story-telling sessions presented to school and library audiences. In mood, the collection's content ranges from the truly spooky to the very funny. None of the ghosts is actually malevolent, though the stories' characters fear they will be. Some ghosts help mortals while others require human assistance, usually to find their missing heads. A few stories, such as "The Bus to Winnipeg" and "Contact," offer a "Twilight Zone" feeling. In the former story, the ghost of a boy killed in a bus accident visits a lad travelling the same route; the latter story finds a boy attempting to use his computer to generate a last-minute school assignment and being "computer-visited" by the ghost of an astronaut from the ill-fated Challenger. Other stories, like "The Oakville Hag" and "Lost in the Snow," involve ghosts rescuing humans from potentially fatal situations. Still other stories deal with the often humorous results of children daring each other to visit "haunted" places, which supposedly house ghosts.
