Volume 18 Number 2 1990 March Drawing remains, in the age of computers, the quintessentially personal expression. Even in reproduction it is immediate, fresh, tantalizing. Georgian Bay, a slim volume of forty-three pen-and-ink drawings by Ontario artist John Hartman, provides a recent reminder of drawing's idiosyncrasy. The drawings are selections from records of trips to clusters of islands in Georgian Bay in Lake Huron over the past few years. They are wry, quirky, taciturn notations, punctuated by dots, scratches and occasional evidence of human presence. The forms floating in horizon-less space are initially unsettling, but ultimately soothing. They reward repeated study. Laconic introductory notes by the artist help to locate the groups of drawings.
