It is specifically designed for use as a text by teachers in pre-service courses in human development. It is easy to read and in a well-organized, chronological manner deals with the various stages of human development from infancy to adolescence. The authors' premise is that a good under­standing of human development enhances both teacher effectiveness and appreciation of the students' learning process. The book contains twenty-seven articles of approximately ten pages in length. While many were written by the authors, they have included others by such experts as Piaget, B. F. Skinner and Louis Terman. The book represents the best thinking of a century on child development but at the same time presents some of the newest work in this area. Divided into six sub-sections, the book addresses the context of devel­opment, schooling, intelligence, I.Q. and development controversy, social and emotional development, and, finally, adolescence. The sections in the book represent both theoretical and applied philosophies of child development. The authors suggest that this book be used as an addendum to the basic text in human development courses. I feel it would be a valuable resource for both pre-service and in-service teacher education courses. As well, the book is excellent professional reading for any teacher's library!
