Richard Ellmann died in 1987. He was the American scholar and author of the definitive biography of James Joyce, as well as other works about W.B. Yeats and Oscar Wilde. ("By now the poetry of Yeats, the plays and criticism of Wilde, the prose of Joyce seem inseparable from his explanations of them.")

A group of Ellmann's former students has produced an interesting, scholarly festschrift in his honour, and a number of prominent scholars have contributed essays, mainly about twentieth-century literature, which was Ellmann's main area of interest. The essays have been carefully chosen and represent a number of authors who were of particular interest to Ellmann, such as Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett and, of course, James Joyce.

Also included is an interview with Ellmann. The interview offers fascinating insights into the opinions and beliefs of an extraordinary scholar.

This volume will be of real interest to literature lovers but is an appropriate purchase for academic libraries only.
