Volume 18 Number 1 1990 January Now a part-time lawyer and full-time writer, Deverell first made his mark with Needles in 1979 and won the $50,000 Seal First Novel Award. This was followed by High Crimes, Mecca, The Dance of Shiva and Platinum Blues. Mindfield will also be out as a movie soon. As with all his novels, there is a hint of the real which you've read re­cently in the news. Most Canadians are aware of the CIA backed mind control experiments in Montreal upon unsuspecting patients, who are still seeking legal redress. Mindfield is a thriller about one such "patient," a Montreal cop whose flashbacks into that time intrude into all current aspects of his job and personal life. Paranoia creeps into the hero's and the reader's mind. Deverell's settings and characters are real - people and places familiar to us all. The intricate plot weaves through an array of interesting personalities, each leading the hero towards break­down and resolution. Appropriately spiced with love, sex, the chase, murder, corruption and the plight of the helpless. This is another winning mystery too close to the truth. Highly recommended.
