It is all too seldom that we read history presented in such an interesting way. George Woodcock has brought his considerable literary background to a study that provides a cultural background for the period from 1814 to 1914. He has adopted a theme approach by covering the period under such chapter headings as "Gentlemen and Others: Class in Canada," "Pioneers! O, Pioneers! The Roles of Women," " The Noble Chieftain: Myth and Reality," and so on.

The research is considerable, but Woodcock has avoided footnotes and has instead listed his sources at the back of the book under the general heading "A List of Sources," followed by the sources under the particular chapter headings. Footnotes would have given this very readable book an intimidating appearance.

The overall appearance of this slim paperback is also attractive. The front cover, on a bright green background, shows a wood engraving of a drawing by F.B. Schell of University Avenue, Toronto, in 1822. Each chapter is headed by an appropriate work of art, and there are several illustrations sprinkled throughout the text.

All secondary school libraries in Canada should have at least one copy of this valuable resource.
