Lucy Maud Montgomery books are like an oasis in the chaotic, fast-paced life of the 1990s. The "Anne Shirley" novels (this is the fourth in the series); take us back to a time of quiet serenity in small rural communities where good manners, correct and beautifully spoken language, and caring for our neighbours were the norm.

Anne comes to Windy Poplars in Summerside, P.E.I., as a new teacher. She is accepted as a tenant by two elderly widows and their housekeeper, Rebecca Dew. She is soon an important part of their "family," but has a tad more trouble settling into her school. The Pringles had someone else in mind for her job and are determined to make life miserable for Anne. Anne accidentally uncovers some information the Pringles did not want made public, and she is suddenly fully accepted and welcomed into society, even though she makes it clear she would never repeat what she has found out.

Anne is confided in many times throughout the novel, and always manages to solve the problems that come her way. The many characters, such as Aunt (doom and gloom) Ernestine, little (tomorrow world) Elizabeth, Miss Minerva Tomgallon (Summerside's version of royalty), to say nothing of Rebecca Dew and Dusty Miller, all meld to make a lovely, interesting story of old world charm.

I would recommend this novel to schools with grades 7 to 12, and certainly to all public libraries and home libraries. The "Anne Shirley" series is definitely a delightful and needed antidote to the violence in our world today.
