Walking with Grandfather is a series of six video programs that encourage students to appreciate the way of life of North America's native peoples. Elders and leaders from forty tribes across the continent gave direction and guidance during its development.

The series is about the visit of two Indian children, accompanied by three white friends, to their grandfather's camp. The interaction among the children and between the children and the grandfather sparks learning situations. The lessons are further reinforced by stories that the grandfather tells from the oral tradition of the native people. The stories deal with universal human values - love, courage, kindness, and generosity. Throughout the series is the development of the theme that people can live in harmony with others and with their environment.

Technically the videos are well done. The characters are played by actors who are approachable and honest; the artwork for the stories is attractive, although perhaps a little "romantic." The pace of the videos is unhurried.

The curriculum guide to support the six programs is excellent, both for its outline of objectives and for the detailed teaching strategies that it offers. For each program the guide includes a story synopsis, several instructional objectives, a list of materials required for the lessons, previewing activities, a focus for student viewing, two lesson plans, and follow-up activities. There is a nice variety of activities, from small-group discussions to role-playing to creative writing. The guide concludes with an annotated bibliography organized by program.

This series has many social studies and language arts applications.

Highly recommended.
