The author, a long-time resident of the North, has been an active reporter of northern life. This book is a sequel to his 1972 work, The Mad Trapper of Rat River.

Trackdown is the story of North's efforts to conclusively identify the reclusive trapper. Readers are taken through the meticulous twenty-year search of leads and rumours that have appeared in the North since the actual events of 1932. These leads range from a Chicago mobster in hiding, a guide for Zane Grey, an ex-military man, and numerous others.

The writing is generally smooth although at times I found all the twists in the trail a bit confusing. The writer interviewed twenty-six living witnesses and each one adds another piece to the identity of the man some knew as Albert Johnson. These individuals add a human touch to the unfolding drama of the story.

The book contains suitable illustrations and diagrams that enhance the narrative. Endnotes, appendices and an index are included. Particularly interesting is Appendix A, which contains a complete list of the personal effects of the trapper.

Trackdown is basically a detective work but would also appeal to readers who have an interest in the Canadian North.
