This is the first paperback edition of the 1981 title, How to Find Relief from Migraine. The author is a sufferer and founder of the Migraine Foundation, whose board of directors and advising physicians have supported and guided this work. She states, however, "that none of the physicians should be held responsible in any way for the comments found herein." This rider does not necessarily devalue the work. After decades of research the mechanics of migraine still elude the researcher and, since doctors are understandably reluctant to pass on unproven data, there is a need for someone not fattened by credentials to get the knowledge, even if it is imperfect, out to other sufferers. This author comes across as a committed individual not out for personal gain (the profits go to the Foundation) who is concerned about the efficacy of various treatments. She is a sufferer herself after all, and the foundation researches all claims as best they can with the funds available. The focus is on practical help and the chapter headings reflect this: 'The Triggers and How to Track Yours Down," "Some Tips for Self-help," "Alternative Therapies," and "Migraine in Children." The information is very accessible, the layout is clear with short chapters broken down into concise sub-parts. Apart from its intended use, its layout makes it a good source for student essays if this subject came up as a health topic. Robert B. Haxton, Sir Charles Tupper Secondary School, Vancouver, B.C. |
