Grades 7 and up / Ages 12 and up Reviewed by Katherine Wallis. Volume 17 Number 5 1989 September This is the second collection of short stories in a four-volume series edited by Rea Wilmshurst. Like the first volume, Akin to Anne: Tales of Other Orphans (McClelland and Stewart, 1988), the stories here are some of those Wilmshurst discovered in the attic of Montgomery's birthplace and home on Prince Edward Island. Others were published in early magazines and journals between 1897 and 1909. Each of the sixteen stories is set in PEI, and they share the sea as a common theme. For the most part they are light-hearted and romantic, but a few are adventure stories and some are quite serious. Picturesque shores, sailboats, and homes are peopled by fishermen, both uncultured and gallant, long-suffering wives, brave children, and a few breathtakingly beautiful women. Their lives and dreams are governed by the sea, dangerous at times, a source of great joy at others. The artist in "The Waking of Helen" revelled "in those transcendent sunsets and sunrises, those marvellous moonlights, those wonderful purple shores and sweeps of shimmering blue water." Tales such as "Natty of Blue Point" and "The Light on the Big Dipper" are intended for children yet the majority of the collection would interest an older audience. Montgomery's familiar quaint dialogue and her lengthy passages of description might deter some readers, but devoted fans of the Anne series will find the tales of Along the Shore sustaining.
