Part of the "Discovering Canada" series, The Vikings is an excellent resource for teachers and students. It is filled with both information and activities on the earliest Europeans to discover North America - the Vikings: who they were, where they travelled, what gods inspired them, where they lived, how they dressed, and what sports they played.

Each chapter contains a short information section, black-and-white illustrations, and a "something to do" page. The activities include building a Viking ship or "knarr," a helmet, and a house; writing with the Viking alphabet; playing a Viking board game; and finding the North Star.

The colourful front- and back-cover illustrations, the large print, and easy-to-understand language of the text make The Vikings particularly attractive for Junior readers. The black-and-white line drawings complement the text in each chapter.

The Vikings is an essential addition to a library or classroom collection on explorers and Norse mythology and would fit in well as a resource in any active learning classroom, encouraging students to learn about Canada's earliest explorers through activities.
