This colourfully illustrated tale by Québec's award-winning artist is sure to attract many young readers. Using two dogs as his models, Roger Pare sketches lazy summer days and the activities enjoyed during this season.

The bright paintings include lots of details that delight most youngsters. For example, "rocking gently in the sun" shows one dog with a pair of scissors about to snip the rope holding the hammock in which the other dog is snoozing. This same whimsy is echoed in the text with such verses as, "Lovely music in the park. That lead singer sure can bark!"

The rhymes in the text also appeal to youngsters. Each page consists of one rhyming couplet in extra large print. The facing page is filled with a brightly painted scene illustrating the verse. When the book is read aloud, children find lots to comment on as they look at the picture and listen to the rhyme.

This book is recommended for use with pre-school children and those in kindergarten. Those schools offering early French immersion programs will want to consider the original version of this book, Plaisirs d'été (La courts échelon 1988).
