Proem Canada intends to become a show-case for talented young Canadian writers. The editors are calling for manuscripts of poetry and short fiction from authors between the ages of sixteen and twenty-six. All submissions receive individual attention and critical comments. By devoting itself entirely to young writers. Proem Canada aims to create an awareness of promising talent.

Fourteen young writers have earned a place in the first issue. According to Chris Magwood, the general editor, these young writers are "voices ... that have the potential to challenge us for many years."

There are seven poetry sections and seven short stories in the first issue. At the end of each selection, a few lines of information about the writer have been included. Written from the perspective of youth, the works probe unflinchingly the various aspects of life. Although sometimes uneven, they are not unskilled and often exhibit strength and insight. The selections are as varied in style as in topic and make for enjoyable reading.

Proem Canada and the young authors who will be published in it deserve the widest audience they can find.
