Deborah Turney Zagwyn is an exhibiting painter and the illustrator of an earlier book, A Winter's Yarn (Red Deer College Press, 1986). Mood Pocket, Mud Bucket is truly a wonderful work of art from the delightful dedication to the final open-ended illustration, from the plot to the large, extremely well done water-colour illustrations on every page.

It is the exciting story of a friendship that crosses age groups, and as such, could be read to or by anyone from grades 1 to 6. The print is large and bold and is easily readable. The text is enclosed within the frame of every illustration; this presentation makes it visually appealing.

The story has wide-ranging appeal because it is an adventure-comedy in a rural setting. It contains witty signs and subtleties in the illustrations. Children really enjoy the plot-making the best of nature's catastrophes. The incongruous events centre on a young girl, Sonia, and her neighbour, Laslo, who is a collector of junk. Whenever Laslo's help is needed, curious things happen along the way.

This is a beautiful story of friends helping friends and could be a starting point in many subject areas. Very highly recommended!
