Volume 17 Number 4 1989 July McClure, Munroe Scott's one-man play about a great Canadian missionary doctor, will appeal to all from grade 9 to adult. The young will enjoy the frank picture of a country at war-quite in the tradition of "M*A*S*H." Adults who have supported church mission efforts and the Red Cross will be pleased to see how their money was spent. Both will like seeing the wily manner in which McClure wheedles war lords and other authority figures into co-operating with his efforts to provide the best medical care possible. The book would be suitable for a school text and would provide a basis for discussion for a wide variety of attitudes. It would probably be valuable to provide a text with a first-hand look at a portion of that vast country's history. Munroe Scott has also written a two-volume biography of Robert McClure, McClure, The China Years and McClure, Years of Challenge (Penguin Books Canada, 1985). Vintage McClure by Robert McClure and Diane Forrest (Welsh Publications, 1988) is a compilation of McClure's philosophy as presented in the many talks he has given to school and church groups. Public librarians will find that those who have heard McClure speak and those with a concern for China today will find this an interesting and popular addition to their collections.
