It describes the life of a truly fascinating and patriotic woman, the Governor General of Canada. The book is organized chronologically. It begins with the birth of Jeanne-Mathilde Benoît in April 1922 and chronicles her career and the events that led to her appointment as the Queen's representative in December 1983. The information is presented clearly and concisely; despite some anecdotes and quotations, it deals primarily with the facts and does not emotionally involve the reader. While the book is a biography, it also presents information on the workings of the Canadian government and on the roles of the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Governor General. These explanations are woven into the text and are not awkward or difficult to understand. The book's format is crisp and attractive; photographs add personal interest. Throughout the book, Barbara Greenwood demonstrates how the events of Madame Sauvé's life, and more importantly, how her attitude towards these happenings shaped her for her role as Governor General. For this reason it is an inspiring book for young Canadians: the Jeanne Sauvé presented by Greenwood believes in herself and in all women, works hard at everything she undertakes, and is fiercely Canadian.
