Ron Stewart works for the Department of Geology, University of Alberta, writing and conducting lectures and tours of the dinosaur exhibits in the department's Paleontology Museum. He has also produced material for the CBC.

His purpose in writing Dinosaurs of the West is to provide a handbook for students interested in the history of paleontology and for amateur field collectors. He has succeeded very well by giving us a book written in non-technical yet scientifically accurate language. Some of his topics include the origin of the dinosaurs, dinosaurs and their young, the dating of fossils, dinosaur excavation and reconstruction, and pioneer dinosaur hunters in Canada.

The material is well presented in a very interesting manner. The text is heavily interspersed with photographs (black-and-white and colour), detailed sketches, maps and a chart. The index is well set up. The book concludes with a glossary of terms, a pronunciation chart of dinosaur names, and a list of dinosaur museums.

This book would make an excellent addition to a school library, both intermediate and secondary.
