Volume 17 Number 4 1989 July Originally published in 1938 and reprinted eleven times, this book contains selections from four of Grey Owl's works: The Men of the Last Frontier ¹, Sajo and the Beaver People (Macmillan, 1987), Pilgrims of the Wild (Macmillan, 1978), and Tales of an Empty Cabin (Macmillan, 1989). The volume begins with a preface by Lovat Dickson, who gives the reader some biographical information about Grey Owl. This sets the mood for the remainder of the book. If a teacher or librarian is considering reading some of this work to a class, the reader should ensure that the audience knows who Grey Owl was and what he was attempting to achieve with his writing. Well over half the stories deal with tales about the beaver. This is probably because Grey Owl allowed them to live with him in his cabin and thus came to know and understand them best. He also relates stories about the moose and the smaller animals of the forest around his cabin who followed him in hopes of a hand-out. This book is still needed and should be read to our youth by our adults so that all will come to understand the need we have for preserving some of our environment in its more natural state. There is a four-page glossary of terms commonly used by the travellers of the far north at the time, and the last section of the book deals with the ways of the North American Indians as Grey Owl knew them.
