UNDER THE TREE.

Pueblito Canada, 1987. Sound Filmstrip. 45 frames. $37.50. Includes teacher's guide and 1 cassette. Distributed by Shirley Lewis.

Grades 4 to 9/Ages 9 to 14

Volume 17 Number 3
1989 May

The filmstrip depicts Christmas preparations of a refugee family from Nicaragua, comparing celebrations there and here. The narration emphasizes how much we take for granted and how urgent the need to share the wealth is. The narration makes demands, moralizes. It is for the older elementary student, but the teacher could develop a commentary suitable for younger children. The accompanying booklet contains music and words to the songs used in the strip. But the real value of the set lies in the workbook, which develops activities on the theme of celebrating peace—greetings, toys, artwork, food, gifts—from the perspective of various cultures. There are even some playlets on the theme suitable for large group presentation. This set has been produced by a Toronto organization working to provide aid and support for poor children in Latin America. Recommended.
