MacDonald was the leader of the CCF/NDP party in Ontario from 1953 to 1970 and a private member of the Ontario legislature until 1982. Almost half of the book is a chronological summary of MacDonald's life story with emphasis on his years spent in the Ontario legislature. Tory scandals and the formation of the NDP receive detailed treatment. The second section of the book covers major Ontario concerns (intergovernmental relations, health, education, agriculture, energy resources, and the north), Tory premiers, the role of labour in the NDP, and the role of the NDP in Ontario politics. Little material about post-war Ontario politics has been published. MacDonald aims to help correct this problem. He describes the slow evolution of Ontario from a rural to an urbanized province under Tory rule. He gives sketches of four Conservative premiers—Drew, Frost, Robarts and Davis. Only Robarts earns MacDonald's admiration as the leader most responsible for modernizing the Ontario government. The print is large and the table of contents provides good information on the main topics. There are notes to identify sources and the index is extensive.
