Kindergarten to Grade 3/Ages 5 to 8 Reviewed by Joanne Robertson Volume 17 Number 3 1989 May Special Stories for Special Kids, a collection of seven short stories and nine poems, was written and published by Rhonda Clayton for the children in her life. Eighteen-year-old Rebecca Hill and thirteen-year-old Danilo Caron created the colour drawings and the black-and-white sketches that Illustrate the book. The print is easy to read. A child in grade 2 or 3 could read this book independently. Each story or poem is dedicated to a particular child or children In Clayton's life. The children to whom the story or poem is dedicated become a character in that tale. For the most part, the plots centre on children playing with their toys. There is a childlike quality to Special Stories for Special Kids. "The Car Chase" gives the impression that the author sat beside the children writing down their descriptions of the action as they played. Two other stories, "David T. Bear" and "Patches," are told from the toys' point of view. The toys, once loved, feel neglected and sad, but the stories end happily when the children return to play with the toys again. Special Stories for Special Kids will mean the most to the children it was written for. Other children may be encouraged to play with their toys and similarly to tell or write stories about them.
