Aya Press celebrated its tenth anniversary with this collection of short stories. The fifteen selections are by established writers such as Marie-Claire Blais, Nicole Brossard, Carol Dunlop and Suzanne Jacob: as well, there are less well known names, all of whom have been published elsewhere. Two of the authors and one of the editors are described as feminists.

The nature of relationships, from friendship and love to family connections, is the overriding theme of the collection. All the stories are concerned with the female experience ranging from childhood to old age. The style is often experimental, as In "Subversion and Passion" by Danielle Drouin. The author employs subheadings to herald a change of topic as the protagonist's musings move across the range of her inexplicable contradictions; a strong sense of mood results. In "Picture Theory" Nicole Brossard shifts locale without announcement and inserts "the white scene" at intervals throughout the narrative. Much is required of the reader in this story.

In “Tenderness” Marie-Claire Blais describes a lesbian relationship in delicate detail adroitly avoiding specifics. Two of the stories ("It Would Be Night" and "As Moist as Montreal") contain very explicit heterosexual love scenes that may offend some readers. Therefore, this collection is not recommended for school libraries but could be approved for a collection of Quebecois literature for adults.
