Ross was born in Saskatchewan in 1908 and grew up there and worked in small-town banks. His feeling for life on the prairies during the Depression permeates his writing. As for Me and My House takes the form of a diary kept by the wife of a preacher just arrived at a new charge in a small prairie town. This device is brilliantly sustained to the end. Under the wide sky in the dust and the wind, we feel the bitter despair of narrow lives, the longing for something more— an escape on a horse, by art or In music—and we feel the complexities of human relationships, the forces that tear people apart and bring them together. There is no doubt that this book is a Canadian classic of the Great Depression. Also because of the depiction of church life, it is a very popular text for study in theological school circles.
