"I'm a magic, magic cat, the world's best acrobat" declares Tommycat, the raggle-taggle cat from the new "Anna, Paul and Tommycat" series.

These delightful books will be welcomed by teachers and parents for their kindergarten to grade 2 readers. The large colour illustrations and catchy text following in a lively style across the bottom of the page will encourage beginning readers and will be useful in shared reading experiences.

The books are illustrated by Michel Bisson in bold, vivid cartoon style. Tommycat has a great bushy tail. The feet that he is pale purple and spends time floating around on the ceiling indicates that he is somewhat unusual. The children, too, are strangely exotic with their watermelon-shaped heads. The text has a French flavour, e.g., Tommycat sings a little song to the tune of "Au Clair de la Lune." Tommycat is a constant concern for the children because he keeps running away, not just down the street but to strange adventures in places like the moon.

There is a lot of material here for whole language approach. Children could explore ways of finding lost cats, planning parties and being interviewed by a famous detective. This attractive series includes Anna, Paul and Tommycat Say Hello, Looking for Tommycat, Where is Tommycat, A Letter from the Moon, Tommycat Comes Back at Last (James Lorimer, 1988) and Tommycat is Gone Again. (James Lorimer. 1988). We'll look forward to the books coming soon: Stuck in the tee, Za-Za to the Rescue, The Chocolate Egg and Anna, Paid and Tommycat Take a Vacation.
