Strong Voices: Conversations with 50 Canadian Authors is a collection of interviews done over the past ten years. We are treated to a set of intriguing and insightful interviews not only with the superstars of Canadian literature but also with the new and regional authors. This collection will be a valuable resource for students and teachers of Canadian literature. The wide range of the interviews and individuals gives this work the potential to cross over into Canadian studies and history.

The interviews can serve as an introduction to the basic themes and luminaries of Canadian literature but this is not its only value. We discover the origins, philosophies, intellectual impetus and the passions of the authors poets and playwrights. Quakerism, ecology, drugs, family, and personal and Canadian identity are topics of passionate discussion.

With a collection such as this done over a period of ten years, jewels become apparent that may not have been evident when the interviews originally took place. The deaths of some of the writers add poignancy to the conversations; the rise to literary success of others and even changes in the political scene cast new light on their character and insight.

Librarians will be remiss if they do not specifically point out Strong Voices: Conuersatiions with 50 Canadian Authors to teachers and students of Canadian literature and history. It is a work that will stimulate discussion for a long period of time.
