The book begins with the reminiscences of this husband-and-wife team of visits to the communities of Cartwright, Nain, Francois and St. Vincent. It continues with the personal accounts of Newfoundlanders who describe in their own words their adventures, experiences and day-to-day life in the outports and rural areas of Newfoundland and Labrador. Anecdotes of fishermen, sealers and whalers are included along with descriptions of ornithologists, librarians, professors, artists and other professionals who live and work in Newfoundland.

What emerges from the anecdotes is a picture of Newfoundland and Labrador that is at first charming, sentimental, even nostalgic, but reveals a grim, sad picture of a society that has always struggled to survive. These anecdotes show Newfoundland and Labrador as it was and remains in the rural and outport areas. The urban areas, St. John's, Cornerbrook and the others, are not portrayed. The insights given by these people provide a better and more readable picture of the society than any deep sociological study could present.

The photographs are wonderful but do not overpower the prose content. This is not primarily a book of photographs, but a book to be read. Although this is a beautiful gift book, it is not necessarily a great book for a school library. There is no index or table of contents.

Recommended.
