Although minor hockey, especially its politics, is a central theme. The story is adult in perspective. Two middle-aged men come into conflict when the roof of the hockey rink in their small northern Ontario community, Fallen Rock. is condemned. The good guy is hockey coach Dean Filane, son of an Italian immigrant, father of seven, and owner of four businesses acquired through hard work. The villain is childless Henry Peabody, member of the Anglo-Saxon elite, lawyer, mortgage broker and realtor, whose wealth was inherited. Recognizing a profit opportunity, Peabody supports building a new sports complex, a two-year project. Filane fears such a solution will harm his young players' development. Peabody counters by obtaining ice time in a neighbouring town and by taking the best players from Filane's team of ten-year-olds. To provide his remaining players with playing opportunities, Filane undertakes a sixty-day quest to raise $25,000 for repairs. A major supporting character is Tony Caruso, a former Junior A player with NHL potential who is attempting to become a professional singer. Although Caruso's behaviour is more adolescent than adult, his presence is not enough to give the title large teen appeal. Principally a book for adult collections.
