Mark Bostwick's Four-Wheeler's Companion will appeal to a very limited audience. If you own a four-wheel-drive vehicle, live in southwestern British Columbia and love exploring in the outdoors, you may find this an interesting book.

The Four-Wheeler's Companion is a guidebook listing fifty-four different back-country "roads" within a few hours of Vancouver. Each "road" is rated according to its "condition," with condition being the quality or passability of the road. Typically, the "roads" reviewed are abandoned bush roads, some of which were originally developed to gain access to timber.

For each of the "roads," the author gives brief instructions on how to get there followed by a description of conditions one will encounter along the way. Also included in the descriptive sections are the author's personal observations about the rewards of having travelled this particular back-country "road."

Although the bulk of the book contains road guides, several short chapters at the end of the book cover buying a four-wheel-drive vehicle, driving tips, ethics of four-wheeling and a bibliography of helpful books and maps. For those of us who own four-wheel-drive vehicles and enjoy exploring abandoned roads, a guidebook such as this may curtail part of our exploring thrill. As for me, I don't want to know what's around the next corner until 1 make that turn.
