1989 January

As the title suggests, this is the final volume in a five-volume series that follows the Canadian Infantry forces in Europe from D-Day 1944 to the spring of 1945. Victory concentrates on the battles in the Rhineland during February and March 1945. Copp and Vogel have maintained a format that utilizes some one hundred photographs, six drawings (by D.A. Colville), thirteen maps and text. The text combines "narratives of action." interviews and citations, but no "War Diaries" as did volume I. In Victory there seem to be more small pictures than in previous volumes.

Although maps are included. I don't find them to be very useful. It is rarely clear to me what the "situation" and specific location of an area are in relation to the larger European setting. The topographical maps (1:25.000) are not easy to understand, nor is there any clear connection or cross-reference from one map to another.

In the concluding five pages entitled “The Politics of Power and the Taste of Victory,” the authors outline the moves and countermoves of the various Allied leaders. Part of the finale suggests we should, "remember the victory for what it was and celebrate it as an enormous and successful effort to prevent the domination of the world by the forces of evil."

The book and the set to which it belongs are a tribute to those who fought for Canada in Europe during World War II. The series is a good one for libraries to have.
