This is a lovely book. As I read it, I remembered the satisfying juxtaposition of rocks and plants in a huge, overgrown rock garden in which I spent many happy hours as a child.

Three introductory chapters cover the basics of rock gardening. Jennifer Bennett covers history, Pat J. Tucker covers construction, and Marnie Flook describes "These Lovely Plants." The main part of the work is a list (using Latin names) of rock plants followed by a list of bulbs. Five experts from different climatic zones give their opinion of each species.

Gardeners are warned that some plants grow well and are invasive, while others are more difficult to grow. The likes and dislikes of plants are listed and the gardener is encouraged to experiment with as well as grow more common species.

A number of colour photographs enliven the first part of the book. Each plant in the listing is illustrated with beautiful line drawings. The book is well indexed and includes a list of resources (societies and recommended books) and a mail-order directory.

This work introduces the reader to rock gardens and what to grow in them. It would be useful in schools with a horticultural program.
