It consists of a series of twenty-two interviews covering a wide variety of people in what is commonly referred to as the "classical music" field. Included are names such as Jon Vickers, Maureen Forrester, Wynton Marsalis and Murray Schafer. Colgrass claims that "in these interviews I wanted to probe the creative process and learn about the external forces that make for a great performer." I rather doubt that this is possible to do in an interview that on average covers less than ten pages, but she does try. The interviews are for the most part interesting reading and they do give some insight into the personality and career of the person being interviewed. This short bit of information might act as a catalyst to further reading. Each interview is preceded by a brief biographical background, which in itself might be useful for students doing research. This book would be of interest to high school students contemplating a career in music or to anyone interested in the careers of the musicians included. It is a worthwhile addition to the biographical segment of the music collection in a high school library. Of special value is the Canadian content. Half of the Interviews are with Canadian musicians, on whom information of this nature is not readily available elsewhere. Walter Kalyn, Thom Collegiate, Regina, Sask.
