This is the story of "The Chapeau Boys." an Ottawa River folk-song written by Pat Gregg in 1884 describing his life in a Quebec lumber camp. Over the years it has become well known and is always sung whenever valley folks get together for singing and dancing.

Posen lived at Chapeau, about 120 km upstream from Ottawa, for two years while researching folklore for a doctoral thesis. There he found such a rich resource of interesting songs that he wrote this book for popular reading. The title comes from the first verse of the song:

I'm a jolly young fellow, Pat Gregg
is my name
I live at the Chapeau. that village of
fame
For singing and dancing and all sorts
of fun oh the boys from Chapeau can not be
outdone.

Considerable information about Pat Gregg was provided by his daughter. Mary Houwen of Renfrew. Posen explores the history of the Chapeau district, then launches into the study of "The Chapeau Boys." Me records eighteen versions sung by professional entertainers and locals who learned the song as children. The variety is a study in itself. He takes the song line by line, providing meaningful comments and historical references. The result is a lively presentation that brings both song and singers to life. A few of the thirty-eight photographs are interesting but many are too small to give much visual satisfaction even though their content is relevant. This book will be of interest to historians and music folklorists. There is a good index and a good bibliography.
