Volume 17 Number 1 1989 January The location for this adventure is none other than the fabulous Supermall in Edmonton. Because of the setting, the novel is appealing. Readers discover a whole new world full of sights and smells from Bourbon Street, the Ice Palace, Fantasy Land, and much, much more. Wilson not only describes what the various attractions look like but also takes readers on thrilling roller-coaster rides, scuba diving in the indoor sea, and for lunch on Europa Boulevard, as Tom and Liz Austen attempt to find out who has been making bomb threats. The plot is interesting and suspense is created with an added subplot, an act of racial violence, which readers are led to believe is tied in with the bomb threats. On a less positive note, the novel falls short of being a great suspense story because of Wilson's need to explain in detail too much of the mall. For the same reason, the characters are weak and the narrative gets lost. Code Red at the Supermall would be a good purchase for students in grades 4 to 7 or for a high school library with an easy reader section.
