THE CANADIAN JEWISH OUTLOOK ANTHOLOGY
Henry Rosenthal and Cathy Berson.
Volume 17 Number 1
The Canadian Jewish Outlook Anthology is a sampler of the rich intellectual fare offered the readers of that magazine (in 1986 renamed Outlook: Canada's Progressive Jewish Magazine ) in its first twenty-five years of publication as "the only Anglo-Jewish pro-socialist magazine in Canada." The content, nearly one hundred articles, editorials, reviews, profiles, graphics, poems, salutes to honoured members of the community, etc., is grouped under the following headings: "The Canadian Jewish Experience," "Secular Humanism," "Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust." "Peace and Disarmament " "Israel and the Middle East," "Yiddish Literature," "Culture," 'Women," and "Canadian Political Issues and Jews on the Left." The articles offer a retrospective view of the thinking, concerns and comments of a powerful and influential ethnic community over a quarter century of stirring times on topics and issues that now, as then, fill the headlines of the world's newspapers. Well-written and extremely readable, thought-provoking material for many a profitable debate and discussion for students of political history, labour studies, and Canadian Jewish social and political history.
