The subtitle of this book gives an accurate reflection of its contents. The book is the proceedings (speeches and question-and-answer sessions) of the conference held in Edmonton on November 8-9. 1986.

With representatives from a broad spectrum of our society, the conference presented Canada's present and possible future role in the nuclear arms race. With such important personalities as David Suzuki, Robert Penner (Canadian Peace Alliance). Brigadier-General Don Macnamara, Ralph Lysyshyn (Department of External Affairs), Lois Wilson and George Ignatieff participating, the conference proceedings are to be taken seriously.

One would think that a conference of this sort would be very biased towards the peace movement, but a fairly balanced view was given. This was due primarily to the presence of the military and government representatives. These and other people who have been or are still involved in Canada's International political activities reminded the delegates of the realities of the nuclear and political world in which we live.

Because of Canada's geographic (and political) position between the two superpowers, Canadians have an obligation to be concerned about the nuclear arms race. And our foreign and defence policies need to reflect not only Canada's right to a peaceful and secure existence on our planet but also our obligations to maintain that peace and security.

Highly recommended for all high school and public libraries.
