The author weaves detailed and accurate observations of bird behaviour and biology in a storylike fashion. Central to the "story" la a black-capped chickadee named Peet who moves about the forest near North Bay, visiting with the other forest-dwelling species. Younger readers will enjoy the adventures of Peet but will probably miss the biological detail. Older readers, with guidance, will find the factual information contained in the storylike text. The book is strongly anthropomorphic; however, as the reader gets further into the book, the book's unique charm comes through. From a biological standpoint, the author's observations are very accurate. The chapter on rearing young presents the behaviour of chickadees in an entertaining fashion. Since chickadees are not migratory. Information on what it is like to migrate is explained to Peel by a true migrant, a redstart. Peter Croskery, Kenora, Ont.
