Elementary school readers who have enjoyed the Encyclopedia Brown books by Donald J. Sobol should appreciate the eleven mysteries posed to and by the members of Canville Elementary School's Mystery Club. For those readers who want to check their answers or who are stumped, detailed explanations are found at the book's conclusion. A number of solutions require students to call upon their knowledge of science and/or social studies, while others can simply be solved by careful reading and attention to detail.

In an effort to connect the eleven chapters together, Weir constructs a story-line around the mystery club's creation by two grade five students, Mike and Tony, who have to overcome the doubts of Principal Tate. Their recruiting and keeping ten members is one of Mr. "fate's conditions for the club's continuance, and the pair employ numerous techniques, including flattery and blackmail, to obtain and then sustain their fragile numbers. True mystery fans, put off by such a skimpy plot, may simply skim in order to get to the chapter's more enticing problem.

A small factual error can be found in the solution to the third mystery, "Loser Pays." In no section of either the Guides or Scouts is semaphore a compulsory part of the program.

The book will find a ready audience in the upper elementary grades, who will look for more titles in the "Mystery Club" series.
