Owls is a fine example of sensitive writing and magnificent illustrations. Bobbie Kalman and her long list of associates have produced another book that can be enjoyed by students and teachers in primary school. The librarian will wish to purchase this title as well as the others in this excellent series.

After a conversational introduction outlining several similarities of these magical-looking birds, we meet eighteen North American owls. There is a good table of contents, glossary and index to help young researchers. Although the tone of the book is for the most part a friendly conversation, Owls is very informative. The outstanding characteristic of this title, though, is the quality of the illustrations by Glen Loates, well-known wildlife artist. The

Illustrations are appropriate for the young reader, who often "reads" a book by intensely studying every illustration.

This title is highly recommended for purchase as library or classroom resource material.
