Married Love is a short novella that explores the hidden dramas and comic catastrophes of ordinary life. Alice and Harry and their son Jake, who live in Fredericton, are visited by the Ontario in-laws for Labour Day weekend.

Thompson uses all the rooms in the house from basement to attic, including the garage where Harry's mother's stepson, Jackie Boy, practises knife-throwing. Harry's mother is allergic to tomatoes; the fridge door won't close properly; Alice is trying to cope with her untidy life; Harry's job as a shoe salesman is in jeopardy.

The novella is a quick, pleasant read but nothing really happens. Married Love is an accurate observation of married life and the language is witty and fun.

Kent Thompson has published four novels, many short stories, two books of poetry, and a number of radio plays produced by the CBC. Thompson is writer in residence at the Regina Public Library during 1988 and 1989.
