This volume of Lucy Maud Montgomery's journal writing offers readers a personal in-depth look at what her life as a writer, wife and mother was like during a period of great change in Canadian history. Her complex character is revealed to us through her colourful, sensitive writing. As a result she becomes as engaging and vital to readers as her own Anne. Writing these journal entries was necessary for Montgomery - it was her therapy. She longed to have a kindred spirit to share her thoughts with, but in the small town where she was the "minister's wife" her diary was the substitute soul mate.

This volume is a valuable source for those interested in early twentieth-century Ontario. We learn about World War l; transportation from the horse-and-buggy stage to the first automobile; medical treatments for physical and psychological problems; and the role of women. The journal entries are nicely complemented by over one hundred photographs of people and places. This volume also contains an extensive chronological listing of notes, omissions (of journal entries), and an index, which allows easy access to the wealth of information contained in this book.

This book would be a valuable addition to a library, and I recommend The Selected Journals of L. M. Montgomery to readers who have enjoyed Lucy Maud Montgomery's works.
