This handsome volume intends to tell the Yukon Indians about their land and its history. Using simple language, with scientific terms explained in the margin, Part of the Land, Part of the Water presents the geography, flora and fauna, and archaeology and early history of the Yukon and Its inhabitants in an inviting manner. There is a chapter on land claims and an extensive description of Yukon native organizations. I was delighted to find a chapter about Yukon Indian languages, complete with map, a discussion of the problems of writing, and some sample native texts.

From the book a young reader would gain a sense of history as it was lived, and a young Yukon Indian could find the values that modem life all too often seems to have discarded. Yet the book raises some questions. Although it claims to be a history, no mention is made of the fact that all the native people have English names. When and how did that come about? Why are the Loucheux known by their derogatory French name, cross eyes? Surely they must have had their own name.

At times one still feels that this book is too "white" in its approach despite all the Indian input. For example, the trader Campbell allows the Indian who rescues him to take his name. What magnanimity! By native custom, Campbell should have taken the name of his rescuer.

In spite of these reservations, this is a valuable source book that certainly deserves a wider readership than that of the Yukon student alone. Recommended.
